German police stopped a 41 y/o man near Passau, Bavaria in a commercial van WITH NO LEFT REAR BRAKES AT ALL . According to him, he was on his way from Vienna to France when the brakes on the rear left side started giving him trouble, so he removed the whole assembly completely and drove on. According to the police report, he wasn’t worried about safety at all. The vehicle was impounded and he had to pay an initial fee of €190 on site (might be more later).

While I personally dislike SUVs, I can understand the want to feel as safe as possible out there. (Let’s not start discussing whether these things actually deliver that perceived safety.)

I have some students where the thought that they will soon be of driving age makes me shudder. How long until we can call Idiocrazy a factual tv show?

What? Before the brakes were causing a problem, now they aren’t. Not to mention the handing benefits I get from the weight savings. Simplify and add lightness!

As it says in the Bible, “if your eye offends you, pluck it out”. Same for brakes.

All the braking power is in the front anyway.....

i imagine that as long as he maintained the fluid line, and didn’t go bombing down some large mountains he’d be fine.

Yes, but having no brakes on one corner will cause the vehicle to be incredibly unstable under braking.

Right? I mean, while it may not be the BEST thing, I’d bet he still had better braking performance than a lot of vehicles on the roads.

yeah, definitely not the best thing... but if he’s handy enough to remove the whole caliper on the side of the road, he’s probably pretty knowledgeable about what he’s doing.

Eh, I’ve done it. Continued to my destination, bought brake fluid from a gas station, and continued home. Even drove around like that a few months until it died.

I’ve raced on three brakes before. Not ideal, but not terrible honestly.

Someone in one of the MINI groups on facebook bought a MINI and the previous owner had issues with the rear passenger side caliper, so he capped the line and took the caliper off the car.

I’ve folded over brake lines +crimped them with vice grips before. To get HOME. Maybe not France-but you gotta do what you gotta do.
